06 Aug 2008 (High Commission of the Republic of Maldives in the UK) As we had anticipated in our post of July 30, the President of the Maldives, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, has declared tomorrow, Thursday, August 7, 2008, a one-off public holiday in the Maldives to coincide with the ratification of the new Constitution.  30 Jul 2008 (Maldives President's Office) The President of the Maldives, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, has issued a communique announcing that in all likelihood, he would be ratifying the new constitution of the Maldives on Thursday, August 7, 2008. Considering that weekends in the Maldives are Fridays and Saturdays, and the President's fondness of declaring one-off public holidays we deem it likely that a one-off public holiday will be declared in the Maldives on Thursday, August 7, 2008.  14 Jun 2008 (Maldives' Ministry of Legal Reform, Information and Arts) Following the Maldives' National team winning of the 2008 SAFF championship, President Gayyoom declared tomorrow, Sunday, June 15, 2008, as a one-off public holiday (recall that Sundays are regular working days in the Maldives as weekends are Fridays/Saturdays).  16 Dec 2007 (Government of the Maldives) The President of the Maldives announced that the Eid al-Adha public holidays would be moved a day earlier, so that the general public holiday of Haj Day will therefore take place on Tuesday December 18, followed by the general public holiday of Eid al-Adha on Wednesday December 19. Civil servants will, in addition be off until Sunday, December 23, inclusively.  11 Oct 2007 (Haveeru) President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has announced that, since the Eid-ul-Fitr day is due to fall on a Friday, the following Monday (October 15) would be a Government holiday to give Government employees an additional day off from work.  12 Oct 2006 (President's Office) The President’s Office issued a directive making Sunday, October 22, and Thursday, October 26, 2006, one-off bridge public holidays, to link this year's Eid al Fitr holidays that are to be observed October 23-25. In compensation, Saturday, November 4th and Saturday, November 18, 2006, will be regular wortking days.  03 Jan 2006 (President's Office) Earlier today, the President’s Office issued a directive making Sunday, January 8, 2006 a one-off bridge public holiday, to link this year's Eid al Adha public holiday. In compensation, Sunday, January 21, 2006 will be a regular wortking day.  21 Jul 2005 (President's Office-Male) Earlier today, the President’s Office issued a directive making Thursday, July 28, 2005, a one-off bridge public holiday, to link with this year's Independence Day public holiday. In compensation, Saturday, August 6, 2005 will be a regular wortking day.  02 Nov 2000 (President's Office) Following the public holidays review, earlier this year, the President's Office has announced that Sunday, November 12, 2000, will be a day in lieu public holiday as this year's Republic Day, November 11th falls on a weekend.  08 Jun 2000 (President's Office) The Cabinet of the Maldives has decided to observe the 2nd day of the month of Rabeeu'l Aakhir, from this year onwards, as the Anniversary of the Day the Maldives Embraced Islam. Religious Holidays : Public holidays in Maldives that are based on certain religious calendars may be subject to local variations due to differing interpretations between different religious authorities, or to seemingly arbitrary changes in the date a holiday is celebrated because it conflicts with another holiday that is based on another calendar, or because the day of the holiday is deemed inauspicious (bad luck). Muslim Holidays : Muslim bank holidays, legal holidays and public holidays for Maldives were evaluated using the Umm al-Qura Calendar of Saudi Arabia which is used in Saudi Arabia and in most of the Persian Gulf States. Holidays may occur a day later in countries outside the Gulf region. The sunrises, sunsets, moon phases, moonrises and moonsets used in these calculations are based on the location of Mecca (latitude 21.42°N, longitude, 39.82°E, GMT+3 hours, no summer time rules).
