Recent News and Updates |

09 Jul 2008 (The Times of Malta) In a recent letter to opposition leader, Labour leader Joseph Muscat, Malta's Prime Minister, Lawrence Gonzi, suggested having one national holiday instead of five.
08 Mar 2008 (The Times of Malta) Business is likely to come to a standstill on Monday, March 10, 2008, especially in the capital, Valletta, and Sliema, as the island goes through the post-general election result routine, usually meaning traffic-clogged roads and widespread celebrations by supporters of the winning party. Attendance at schools will also be poor, as school transportation is not available on the Monday after a general election.
16 Dec 2007 (The Times of Malta) Malta's Labour Party has promised that, if elected, public holidays that fall on a weekend would give rise to a day in lieu on the following scheduled working day. With the next parliamentary elections in April 2008, that would mean that the 2008 Saints Paul and Peter public holiday (locally called L-Imnarja) that falls on a Sunday, would be followed by a day in lieu public holiday on Monday, June 30, 2008.
21 Oct 2007 (New Europe) At a recent meeting with members of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD), Finance Minister, Tonio Fenech, re-iterated its position that there would be no return to the policy of "Days in Lieu" (giving the next working day as a holiday whenever a public holiday falls on a week-end).
28 Mar 2007 (MaltaMedia Daily News) The Minister for Education, Youths and Employment, Louis Galea, has declared the day a public holiday for all state, church and independent schools, on June 4th, 2007, the day after Dun Gorg Preca’s canonization.

Background Information |

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Malta are regulated by the National Holidays and other Public Holidays Act of 1975 (ACT XXX of 1975, as amended by Legal Notices: 38 and 59 of 1977; Act X of 1980; Legal Notices 8 and 40 of 1987; and Acts VIII of 1989 and II of 2005).
Weekend Public Holidays: In Malta, since January 1st, 2005, public holidays that fall on a weekend are not officially moved to the following Monday, but in the past it was a common practice to give days in lieu on the following Monday for any public holidays occurring on a Saturday or Sunday. A recent law has put an official end to that practice, but there have been vocal protests so that business travelers are advised to avoid trying to organize any business on the Monday following a week-end holiday.
Sette Giugno is the Commemoration of the 1919 Uprising.
Post-Electtion Mondays: On the Monday after a general election, business is likely to come to a standstill and school transportation is traditionally not available.
