03 Nov 2006 (DOM Actu) The dates for the first round of the French legislative elections, announced on October 25, would coincide with the anniversary of the abolition of slavery in 1848, a public holiday in French Guiana.  More News Updates For the full version of the summarized news items above, and older news items not displayed above, go to the French Guiana public holidays news and updates page, or worldwide public holidays news and updates page, or subscribe to one of our free email newsletters.

Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in French Guiana are the same as those in France and are regulated by Article L222-1 du Code du travail (Labour Code), to which are added Ash Wednesday and Abolition Day, as per the Loi 85 530 du 30 juin 1983 (J0 du 1er juillet, 1983).  Carnival is not an official public holiday, but both Carnival Monday and Carnival Tuesday are treated as a customary (common law) days off.  Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that occur on a weekend remain on that date (ie. they are not moved to another date, such as the following Monday, for example).  Whit Monday was no longer recognized as one of the public holidays as of 2005, to help fund health care for elderly persons following the high number of elderly deaths during the heat wave of the summer of 2003. However, it returned to the list of French public holidays starting in 2008.  French Guiana International Codes GF and GUF (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .gf (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of French Guiana information and news: Bank of France (French Guiana central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (French Guiana maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in French Guiana), and Wikipedia (includes French Guiana commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).
