Background Information

The Northern Mariana Islands are also known as Saïpan (particularly in the USA), Saipan being the main island.  Governing Law: the official list of Northern Marianas public holidays and of their observance is governed by 1 CMC section 311, as amended in April 2006.  Austerity Holidays: Established by Public Law 15-24, the austerity holidays take place every other Friday. This cost-cutting measure began in September 2006 and will continue until the end of fiscal year 2007. When an austerity holiday falls on the same date as a public holiday (Good Friday 2007, for example), then the austerity holiday is moved to the day before, or the day after, if the public holiday falls on a Monday .  Columbus Day was renamed Commonwealth Cultural Day, beginning in 2006.  Northern Mariana Islands International Codes MP and MNP (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .mp (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Northern Mariana Islands information and news: ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Northern Mariana Islands maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Northern Mariana Islands), and Wikipedia (includes Northern Mariana Islands commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).
