Background Information

South Sudan became a fully independent country on July 9, 2011.  For South Sudan public holidays from before July 9, 2011, see the GoSS regional public holidays listed in the list of official public holidays in the Sudan.  The South Sudan public holidays currently listed have been obtained on March 1st, 2011, from the current semi-autonomous Government of South Sudan (GoSS). It is possible that some Muslim public holidays will eventually be added to the list of official public holidays in South Sudan.  The ISO-3166 code for South Sudan has not being finalized, yet, but the SS code seems likely, despite its extremely negative historical connotation.  Martyrs' Day: This public holiday was initiated, beginning in 2008, by the Jonglei government of Southern Sudan, to commemorate the anniversary of the death, in a 2005 airplane crash, of Dr. John Garang de Mabior, who was at the time First Vice President of Sudan and President of the semi-autonomous Southern Sudan.  South Sudan International Codes SS and SSD (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .ss (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of South Sudan information and news: ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (South Sudan maps, demographics and economic statistics), and Wikipedia (includes South Sudan commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).
