National public holidays are regulated by Lei nº 662, de 6 de abril de 1949 which was amended by federal law 10.607 of December 19, 2002. Religious holidays are regulated by the Lei nº 9.093, de 12 de setembro de 1995. • Pontos Facultativos (loosely translated as optional bridge holidays) are a uniquely Brazilian construct whereby some days are specified by the government (either at the federal, state or municipal level) as optional holidays that can be taken but need to be compensated later. This usually applies to civil servants, bank employees, and employees in large companies. The list of pontos facultativos included here is the list announced by the federal government. In pratice, most states will declare the same dates, albeit at the last-minute, and if the states do not then most municipalities also will. • Carnival Tuesday (terça-feira de Carnaval) is not a national public holiday in Brazil (only in some states and municipalities).
