Following its victory in Bangladesh's National Assembly elections of June 12, 1996, the Awami League of Shaikh Hasina Wajid has declared August 15 as an annual public holiday, starting this year.

The date marks the death anniversary of Shaikh Mujibur Rehman, the father of Shaikh Hasina, and founding-father of Bangladesh, who was killed, with other members of his family in a coup on August 15, 1975.
