The Hong Kong legislature has published the text of the "Public Holiday (Special Holidays 1997) Bill" which declares July 1 and 2, 1997, public holidays to coincide with the handover of Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China.
Earlier this year, the government of China had announced its intention of declaring a 2-day public holiday to celebrate its assumption of control of Hong Kong (24-Mar-1996), but until July 1st, 1997, laws regarding Hong Kong public holidays must still be discussed and voted upon in Hong Kong, in accordance with the Holidays Ordinance (Cap. 149) and the Employment Ordinance (Cap. 57).
