The House Committee of Hong Kong's Legislative Council has passed in first reading the Holidays (Amendment) Bill 1998 which provides for a new Schedule of general holidays for 1999 onwards.
The Amendment Bill adds, from 1999 onwards, Labour Day (the first day of May) and the Buddha's Birthday (the eighth day of the fourth lunar month) will become general public holidays.
As compensation, the Amendment Bill removes the Sino-Japanese War Victory Day (the third Monday in August) and October 2nd (the day following National Day) as general public holidays, as had been discussed in March (30-Mar-1998).
The Amendment Bill also confirms Labour Day as a statutory public holiday, as per the Employment (Amendment) (No. 5) Ordinance 1997 (03-Dec-1997).
Finally, the Amendment Bill changes all occurrences of "public holiday" to "general holiday" and designates as an additional general holiday the day following two general holidays that fall on the same day unless the Chief Executive in Council appoints another day in substitution.
