Earlier this week, Japan's Diet (Parliament) approved the move of 2 of Japan's official public holiday to always occur on a Monday, under a system now dubbed "Happy Mondays".
Law 141, which will take effect on January 1st, 2000, moves the observance date of the Coming of Age Day (previously January 15th) public holiday to the 2nd Monday in January, and the observance date of the Health and Sports Day (previously October 10) public holiday to the 2nd Monday in October.
In its original form (26-Apr-1998), the opposition-sponsored draft bill had proposed to also move the Marine Day public holiday (July 20), and the Respect for the Aged Day public holiday (September 15). The ruling Liberal Democratic Party initially only agreed to reschedule the Coming of Age Day and Respect for the Aged Day public holidays, but switched to the Coming of Age Day and the Health and Sports Day, after protests from the Japanese Federation of Senior Citizens' Clubs.
