The Vice-President of Panama's Legislative Assembly, Juan Peralta, has announced that the recently introduced bill abrogating the "días puentes" (long weekend public holidays) would neither be debated, let alone approved.
This seems to be due to last-minute defections in President Mireya Moscoso's coalition, the Acuerdo Legislativo y de Gobernabilidad (also called the Pacto de la Pintada).
Días puentes, the system by which some fixed-date public holidays are moved to the nearest weekend, was established in 1997 by President Ernesto Pérez Balladares, through the Decreto Ley Nº8 del 2 de junio 1997, que Establecio los Dias Puentes y Modifica el Articulo 46 del Codigo de Trabajo (04-Jul-1997).
