The new Chinese administration of Macau has decided to retain a number of Portuguese public holidays for the calendar year 2000.
According to the announced decision of the Macao Special Administrative Region, six Catholic holidays, as well as Labour Day, Portugal's national day and the Day of the Restoration (of Portugal's independence) will remain holidays, at least for 2000.
This stopgap measure seems to reflect the failure of the Preparatory Committee of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) to agree on a new listing of official public holidays, despite having been discussing the issue for over a year and a half (19-Sep-1998 and 04-Aug-1998).
