Panama Revokes Long Weekend Public Holidays Decree

(Posted on Monday, November 1, 1999)

Source: Asamblea Legislativa (Panama)

Late last month, Panama's Legislative Assembly has passed the law, "Ley 51 que deroga el Decreto Ley Nº 8 de 1997, que estableció los días puentes y modifica el Articulo 46 del Código de Trabajo 03-X-1999", which abrogates the system of días puentes public holidays.

Días puentes, the system by which some fixed-date public holidays are moved to the nearest weekend, was established in 1997 by President Ernesto Pérez Balladares, through the Decreto Ley Nº8 del 2 de junio 1997, que Establecio los Dias Puentes y Modifica el Articulo 46 del Codigo de Trabajo (04-Jul-1997).

A first attempt was made in 1998 to abrogate the decree, but it floundered in the Legislative Assembly, failing to garner enough votes (01-Dec-1998).
