(Posted on Wednesday, June 23, 1999)

The Queen of England has proclaimed a one-off, additional bank holiday (aka. public holiday) on New Year's Eve, Friday, December 31, 1999, for the entire United Kingdom.

This extra public holiday was included in the regular proclamation of bank holidays in the coming year, made by the monarch through the Privy Council.

It had been first proposed last year by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, in charge of the Government's preparations for the Millennium celebrations (03-Jun-1998).
