UK Asked For Northern Ireland March 17 Public Holiday

(Posted on Tuesday, February 8, 2000)

Source: The News Letter (Belfast)

The UK's Northern Ireland Assembly overwhelmingly passed a motion sent to the UK's Secretary of State, Peter Mandelson, to make St Patrick's Day (March 17) a public holiday.

Northern Ireland's Assembly does not have legislative power to declare public holidays in Northern Ireland, and therefore the British Government must ratify the Assembly's decision.
