(Posted on Friday, June 1, 2001)

Despite opposition protests, Ghana's Parliament has deleted the observation of June 4 as a statutory public holiday, effective immediately.

June 4th, which has been a public holiday in Ghana for about 20 years, marks the day in 1979 when former president, Jerry Rawlings, took over in a coup from the military government at the time.
