The Parliament of Lithuania, by a vote of 63 to 24 with 10 abstentions, approved a proposal by the Social Democrats to make May 1st (International Labor Day) a public holiday, once again.
This public holiday was canceled in 1990, then restored in 1996, then canceled again in 1997.
At the previous two parliamentary sessions, the vote on the proposal was postponed at the requests of the Liberal Union and the Conservatives. This time, though, Parliament Chairman, Arturas Paulauskas, however, presented it as a matter of special urgency.
It is not obvious that this public holiday will be celebrated this year, for the law establishing the holiday will come into effect only after it is signed by President Valdas Adamkus and published in Lithuania's official gazette, the "Valstybes zinios" (News of the State).
