Philippines President, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, has issued Proclamation No. 120, dated of December 7th, which makes December 17, 2001, a one-off public holiday throughout the country on the occasion of the upcoming Eid-Ul-Fitre Muslim festival.
The accepted date for the End of Ramadan in the Philippines this year is actually, Sunday, December 16, but the Proclamation justifies the choice of December 17 as follows: "In order to bring the religious and cultural significance of Eid-Ul-Fitre (Feast of Ramadan) to the fore of national consciousness, and upon the recommendation of the Office of Muslim Affairs, it is necessary to declare Monday, December 17, 2001, instead of Sunday, December 16, 2001".
This proclamation follow a recent one making December 24 a public holiday (18-Apr-2009).
