Due to the continuing cold spell in Siberia and the Far East, on January 12, 2001, schools in Buryatia and the Jewish Autonomous Okrug were closed as temperatures dipped to minus 40-45 degrees Celsius, and the mayor of Vladivostok declared 12 January a non-working day.
