Earlier today, in a press release, Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni, declared Tuesday, June 26, 2001, as a one-off public holiday on the occasion of the upcoming parliamentary elections.
According to the aforementioned press release "President Museveni has declared the June 26, 2001, Parliamentary Polling Day, to be a public holiday in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by Sub Section 3 of Section 1 of the Public Holidays Act 1965, as amended by the Public Holidays Amendment Statute 1992".
Electoral public holidays are common in Uganda.
Most recently, 3 public holidays were declared in relation with the recent presidential elections; one to allow people to go and check their names in the voters' register and pick cards for voting (27-Feb-2001), one to allow the employees of government and other organizations to participate in the presidential election (09-Mar-2001), and finally one to enable Ugandans participate in activities marking the swearing in of the president-elect (10-May-2001).
