The Acting Premier of Australia's Victoria State, John Thwaites, has announced that the Australia Day long weekend, abolished by the former Kennett government in 1993, had been reinstated on the Victorian calendar, due to the fact that Australia Day this year falls on a Saturday.
This follows a similar move last summer by NSW (17-Aug-2001) and an earlier announcement in late August (31-Aug-2001).
