Indonesia Makes Chinese New Year An Official Public Holiday

(Posted on Thursday, April 11, 2002)

Source: Jakarta Post

On April 9, 2002, Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri issued Presidential Decision 19, making Chinese New Year an official national public holiday, for the first time in Indonesia.

This follows the recent announcement by president Megawati Soekarnoputri that, starting in 2003, Imlek (as Chinese New Year is called in Indonesia) would become an official public holiday (18-Feb-2002), and last year's declaration of Imlek as an official, albeit optional, public holiday (19-Jan-2001).
