In a recent interview, Latvia's President, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, prompted legislators in the Saeima (Latvia's Parliament) to make Russian Orthodox Christmas an official public holiday.

This is believed to ba a move to soothe the feelings of the large Russian minority.

In related news, Latvia's Ministry of the Economy has issued a reminder that government institutions will be open on Saturday, December 28, 2002, instead of Monday, December 30, 2002, in compliance with the Cabinet of Ministers' decree, issued earlier this year (26-Mar-2002).
