Malaysia Declares December 16 Public Holiday In Selangor

(Posted on Thursday, December 5, 2002)

Source: New Straits Times (Shah Alam)

The Deputy State secretary of Malaysia's State of Selangor, Datuk Ahmad Latffi Hashim, has announced that the state public holiday for this year's birthday of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, had been set for Monday, December 16, 2002.

The manner in which the date of December 16 was arrived at is extremely convoluted.

The official birthday of the Sultan is December 11, but under current rules, if December 11 does not fall on a Saturday, the next Saturday is declared a public holiday, which should have meant that the announced date should have been Saturday, December 14.

However, December 14 had already been declared a public holiday for the Hari Raya Qurban public holiday, which should have been observed on December 7, but had been moved to December 14 because December 7 is a Saturday, and the first Saturday of the month is a non-working day in Malaysia.
