Philippines Declares Holy Wednesday Public Sector Holiday

(Posted on Wednesday, March 13, 2002)

Source: Office of the President (Malacañang)

Presidential Spokesman, Rigoberto Tiglao, announced that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and the Cabinet, had reached a consensus to declare Holy Wednesday (March 27, 2002) as a special public sector holiday for government employees only.

It had earlier been proposed that Holy Wednesday be a nationwide public holiday, but the public holiday was restricted to the public sector following concerns raised by export-oriented companies.

Presidential Spokesman Tiglao did, however stress that Black Saturday (sandwiched by Good Friday and Easter Sunday) remained a nationwide public holiday, as per Proclamation No. 164.

The order likewise allows government workers not to report for work on March 25 and 26 except under certain conditions.
