The Labor Ministry of Portugal has announced that it plans to introduce changes to the Labor Law which would shift almost all of Portugal's official public holidays to Fridays or Mondays.
The reason given by the conservative government is that fixed-date public holidays, and some Easter-based public holidays, lead workers to also take off a Friday or Monday whenever a public holiday falls on a Thursday or Tuesday (a practice called "bridge holidays").
As part of the reform, the government wants the Roman Catholic Church's consent to ensure that four of Portugal's religious public holidays -- including Corpus Christi and All Saints' Day -- always fall on Fridays or Mondays. Not surprisingly, the Church has said it would oppose the measure.
