Antigua and Barbuda's prime minister, Lester Bird, has announced plans to have December 9th, the birthday of the island's first National Hero and prime minister, Sir Vere Cornwall Bird, to be made a public holiday.

It is not clear, yet, what would become of the "Vere Cornwall Bird (Snr.) Day" public holiday that was promulgated in the "Public Holidays (Amendment) Act, 2000" (An Act to amend the Public Holidays Act, Cap. 354) in replacement of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) Day on the first Monday of July (28-Dec-2000).
