The President of the Republic of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, has signed a decree making the 7-day period from January 1 to January 7, 2004, as official public holidays.

The 3 additional non-working days thus declared (January 2, 5, and 6) will be compensated by making 3 Saturdays into regular working days: January 10, January 17, and January 31, 2004.

The decree does stipulate that this is a one year experiment.
