The General Office of China's State Council has announced that it had decided to suspend the May Day, weeklong, Golden Week, public holidays "to reduce the flow of people across large areas so as to prevent the spread of SARS".
Normally, under the 1999 system of Golden week public holidays (20-Sep-1999), and last December's announcement of the official 2003 public holidays in China (20-Dec-2002), China should have been on holidays from May 1-7, 2003, with the neighboring weekends changed to working days to compensate the 2 extra days of public holidays (05-Sep-2002).
Instead, as per today's State Council's announcement, the new public holidays will run from Thursday, May 1, to Monday, May 5, 2003, instead.
