The State Council of China has released the official list of 2004 public holidays, including the list of working Saturdays and Sundays that compensate for the 3 weeklong Golden Week public holidays.

The periods of public holidays in China in 2004 will be:

• January 1.
• January 22-28.
• May 1-7
• October 1-7

Asis the case since the implementation of the weeklong, Golden Week, public holidays (20-Sep-1999), in compensation for the additional public holidays, some nearby weekend days have been declared as regular working days. The compensatory working weekend dates in 2004 will be:

• Saturday and Sunday, January 17-18.
• Saturday and Sunday, October 9-10.

Recall that, earlier this year (21-Apr-2003), the May Day, weeklong, Golden Week, public holidays were shortened by the General Office of China's State Council "to prevent the spread of SARS".
