(Posted on Tuesday, April 8, 2003)

Earlier today, Government spokesman Christos Protopapas, announced that Wednesday, April 16, 2003, had been declared a one-off public holiday in Greece.

This is to coincide with the signing ceremony to expand the European Union (from 15 to 25 members next year, taking in eight east European countries as well as Cyprus and Malta), when massive security and anti-war rallies are expected to bring Athens to a standstill.

Government spokesman Christos Protopapas specified that the holiday would only apply in the greater Athens area and would include all civil and broader public sector employees.
