Latvia Could Declare Orthodox Chistmas Public Holidays

(Posted on Wednesday, December 24, 2003)

At a recent meeting between the ruling Latvians First party and the Russian
Orthodox Church leadership, Mr Jekabsons, vice-chairman of the Saeima (Latvia's Parliament) said he would be in favor of making January 7 (Orthodox Christmas) an official public holiday in Latvia.

Most commentators, however, are skeptical of this pronouncement, as such statements were made before by high government officials (20-Dec-2002) and also amendments to that effect have been proposed in the Saeima many times in the past by minority parties, only to be rejected by the current ruling party (16-Jan-2003).
