Switzerland Public Holidays Could Become Constitutional

(Posted on Friday, June 20, 2003)

A bill was introduced in the Parliament of Switzerland by parliamentarian Josef Zisyadis to amend the Swiss Constitution by enshrining 6 additional public holidays in the Constitution of Switzerland (inscrire comme jours fériés assimilés au 1er août).

The annual public holidays mentioned in the aforementioned initiative parlementaire (03.444 n Iv.pa. Zisyadis. Inscription dans la constitution de quelques jours de repos officiels) are: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension, Whit Monday, and Christmas).

Currently, only August 1st, Switzerland's national day is listed in the Swiss Constitution (28-Nov-1997).

The stated aim of this initiative is to protect these dates (currently non-working public holidays in most Swiss Cantons) from losing their non-working status as more and more large stores open on public holidays.
