Thailand Declares 6-Day APEC Public Sector Holidays

(Posted on Thursday, August 7, 2003)

Source: National News Bureau of Thailand (Bangkok)

The Secretary to Thailand's Prime Minister, Yongyuth Tiyapairat, has announced that all government agencies and states firms will have four extra public holidays, October 17, 20, 21 and 22, as well as the weekend of October 18-19, to coincide with the upcoming APEC Summit.

The announcement states that the private sector will be free to follow, or not, the public sector, but makes no strong pitch for a private sector holiday, as it did on previous occasions (15-Dec-1997).

This announcement is reminescent of past one-off public holidays announcements when other international conferences came to Thailand (20-Jan-2000).
