Antigua and Barbuda Public Holidays Amendments Act 2004

(Posted on Thursday, March 4, 2004)

Antigua and Barbuda's Governor-General, James B. Carlisle, has signed into law, the "Public, Holidays (Amendment) Act, 2004" (Law No. 1 of 2004, An Act to amend the Public Holidays Act).

The bill, first proposed by Antigua and Barbuda's prime minister, Lester Bird, late last year (10-Dec-2003), creates a new public holiday, "Sir Vere Cornwall Bird (Snr.) Day", on VC Bird's birth date of December 9th.

The bill, as gazetted, erroneously states that the current VC Bird public holiday is currently observed on the first Monday of July, while in fact it is on the Tuesday that follows the first Monday of August.

It was the former Caribbean Community (Caricom) Day that was on the first Monday of July and was replaced by the VC Bird public holiday as per the "Public Holidays (Amendment) Act, 2000" (28-Dec-2000).
