The legislature of Argentina's capital territory (Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires) has passed Ley CABA Nº: 1322 / 2004 restoring the 2 days of Carnival as paid public holidays for its public sector, and as optional holidays for the private sector.
The law, published in the Boletin Oficial Nº 1946 el 21-05-2004, specifies that the 2 days are compulsory holidays for the public sector (el descanso es obligatorio) and optional holidays for the private sector (y optativo para las actividades industriales comerciales y civiles en general).
Carnival Monday and Tuesday were declared public holidays by the decree 2.446 of 1956. Subsequent military governments increasingly tried to restrain its observance until 1976, when the last military junta passed law 21.329 which prohibits the celebration of Carnival, and which is still in effect.
