After a few weeks of hesitation, Chile finally approved Law 19.973, which declares Friday, September 17, 2004, as a one-off public holiday, as compensation for the fact that this year, the September 18 and 19 public holidays both fall on a weekend.
The Law 19.973 also changes the status of the public holidays of January 1st, September 18, and December 25, into "feriados obligatorios e irrenunciables" which means that stores and shopping malls will no longer be able to open on these 3 public holidays.
