French Polynesia Confusion Over November 12 Public Holiday

(Posted on Thursday, November 11, 2004)

Source: Radio Australia

The Tahitipresse online news site reports that the pro-Independence leader of French Polynesia, Oscar Temaru, who claims he is still president, told Tahiti television last night he was declaring Friday, November 12, 2004, a one-off public holiday, thereby giving the people of French Polynesia a four-day long weekend.

However, Gaston Flosse, who has the backing of the French government to be president, but who still can't get into the presidential office because it is occupied by Mr Temaru and his supporters, is quoted by Tahitipresse as saying that Friday is a normal work day.
