The Guyana National Assembly approved the motion by the Special Select Committee on the Review of Public Holidays, adding two public holidays: May 26 (Independence Day) and May 5, (Arrival Day).
The date of May 26 was already a public holiday in Guyana, until 1970 when it gained its independence, and when the date of February 23 was preferred as a mark of independence.
As for May 5, it comes from May 5, 1838, being the date when the largest group of immigrants came to Guyana as Indentured labourers.
The Public Holidays Act review process was initiated in Parliament a year ago (11-Apr-2003) and involved submissions from the public and various organizations earlier this year (23-Mar-2004).
