Guyana's House Special Select Committee, formed last year to review Guyana's list of official public holidays, met last week to get public opinion on the proposed inclusion of May 5 and May 26 as official public holidays in Guyana.
Groups that supported the inclusion of the two holidays were: the Indian Arrival Committee, the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha, the Guyanese Indian Foundation Trust, the Guyana Islamic Trust and the National Front Alliance.
Opposed to the inclusion of the 2 aforementioned possible new public holidays were: the Guyanese Organisation of Indigenous People (GOIP) who proposed that September 10 be declared a public holiday to honour Guyana’s Indigenous people, and the African Cultural Development Association, supported by the IAC, who proposed that October 12 be declared African Holocaust Day. Presumably, these groups took their cue from Venezuela's recent change (12-Oct-2002) of the name of the Columbus Day public holiday to "Día de la Resistencia Indígena" (day of the indigenous/native resistance).
These public consultations were decided upon late last year (15-Dec-2003) as part of the Public Holidays Act review process initiated in Parliament earlier last year (11-Apr-2003).
