After an acrimonious parliamentary debate between the governing PAICV and the opposition MPD, a bill to restore the Youth Day (Dia da Criança) public holiday was approved.
This bill is expected to take effect immediately, beginning this coming June 1, 2005.
The Youth Day (Dia da Criança) public holiday was an official public holiday in Cape Verde from 1975 to 1990, but it was cancelled when the MPD came to power in 1991 (lei n 16/IV/91 de 30 de Dezembro).
The last time the list of official public holidays in Cape Verde was amended, was in 1999, when the January 13, Democracy Day, public holiday was added (22-Mar-1999).
