East Timor's Parliament has passed law No.10/2005 overhauling its list of official public holidays and clarifying the doubts regarding the legal characterisation of some festive or commemorative dates.
The law lists 15 official non-working public holidays and 7 official commemorative dates (that are regular working days). It also leaves the door open for the declaration of local holidays.
The new law repeals previous dispositions (mainly from the time of the UN mandate), namely Article 4 of UNTAET Directive No. 2000/4, of June 30, 2000, as amended by UNTAET Directives Nos. 2001/9, of July 18, 2001, and 2002/2, of March 5, 2002, as well as UNTAET Executive Order No. 2000/1, of July 10, 2000.
