Estonia's parliament has approved the Public and National Holidays Act, § 2 and § Work and Rest Law Amendment Act 25 (RT I 2005, 24, 185) which declares December 24 as a new annual public holiday, beginning in 2005.
This new public holiday will adjoin December 25 and 26 which are already public holidays as per the 1998 Public and National Holidays Act (RT I 1998, 13, 162) which then overhauled the Estonian legislation governing public holidays and days off in Estonia (27-Jan-1998), as was later amended (11-Feb-1999, 14-Apr-2004 and 23-Mar-2005).
An earlier proposal to stretch the holiday season to include December 27-31 was abandonned amid concerns that it would harm Estonia’s economy.
