Iran's Majles Social Committee has confirmed its approval of the cancellation of five annual public holidays.
These five public holidays are:
• Farvardin 12, the referendum day for Islamic Republic
• Khordad 15 (5 June 1963), the first Islamic uprising, which led to the arrest and exile of Imam Khomeyni
• the martyrdom of Imam J'afar Sadeq, the founder of J'afari Shiism
• the birthday of his holiness Imam 'Ali
• the martyrdom of Imam Reza.
The Social Committee has, however, added that a second day has been added to the annual Id al-Fitr (End of Ramadhan) public holiday,meaning that, overall, the number of annual public holidays will be reduced by four days.
The announcement follows last spring's request by the Head of the Majlis (Iranian Parliament) Economic Commission, Davoud Danesh-Jafari, that members of Majlis Research Center probe the harmful effects of the high number of public holidays on the economy (13-Apr-2005).
Note that Jashn e Sadeh had been declared as a last-minute "one-off" public holiday 3 years consecutive (26-Jan-2005).
