Kiribati Public Holidays Legislation For 2006 And Beyond Amended

(Posted on Friday, December 30, 2005)

Source: Parliament of Kiribati (Tarawa)

Kiribati's Attorney General, Titabu Tabane, has signed into law the "Public Holidays (Amendment) Act 2005 (No. 14 of 2005)" (An Act To Amend The Public Holidays Ordinance).

To avoid the awkwardness of having to repeal the whole of that previous act's Schedule and substituting a new Schedule of "all approved public holidays in Kiribati", as was done in the past (see, for example 12-Nov-2001 and 22-Jun-2002), the aforementioned act amends Sections 8 of the "Public Holidays Ordinance (Cap.81)" so that "Minister, acting in accordance with the advice of the Cabinet, will have power to amend the Schedule simply by publishing a notice to that effect in the Gazette" and in addition, "the Minister will retain the power under section 6 to vary the days fixed as public holidays on an ad hoc basis".
