Tanzania's April 7 Public Holiday Goes National

The government of the United Republic of Tanzania has made the April 7, Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume Day, regional public holiday, voted by the Parliament of Zanzibar in 2002, into a full national public holiday, beginning in 2005 (ie. at the end of this week).

This follows from Tanzanian President, Benjamin William Mkapa's recent signing of a law that stipulates that there shall be public holidays in honor of the 2 founders of the nation that comprises of the mainland Tanzania and the Indian Ocean archipelago of Zanzibar (09-Oct-2002).
