Hobart will slow to a crawl at the end of the week as thousands of city workers flex off on Friday to enjoy a rare four-day weekend (October 26-29). And Thursday's Royal Hobart Show public holiday is expected to cost the Tasmanian economy $10 million when the south of the state shuts down.
It is estimated that up to 4000 of the state's 20,000 public servants would use their accrued overtime to take Friday off. Friday's student-free day could also prompt parents to take the "traditionally quiet" day off to look after their children.
