Prime Minister John Howard will today announce Hobart as one of eight Australian cities to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation forum next year. Hobart will host the Small and Medium Enterprises Ministerial Meeting and Working Group from March 4-9, 2007.
Hundreds and possibly thousands of delegates, support staff, security personnel and media will descend on the city for the six-day meeting, which coincides with Tasmania's peak tourist season.
Hobart hotels are expected to be booked to capacity with top government figures and business leaders from four continents. The meetings will have massive security implications. APEC meetings also will be held in Adelaide, Cairns, Canberra, Coolum, Darwin, Perth and Sydney. The meetings will begin in January, with Australia's APEC year culminating with the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting in Sydney on September 8-9.
