Chile's Pinochet Dies - No National Mourning

(Posted on Monday, December 11, 2006)

Former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, died at 91 on Sunday, and will not have a state funeral or national mourning.

Pinochet's funeral will take place beginning at 11 local time on 12 December at the Military School in Santiago, and he will then be cremated, his ashes returned to his family. The Government of President Michelle Bachelet urged Chileans to demonstrate peacefully, but a security plan was in place nonetheless for reactions to the former general's death. The Secretary-General of the Government, Ricardo Lagos Weber, earlier said the administration would make sure that "a climate of calm remains in the country".
