Costa Rica's Asked To Exempt Schools From Moveable Public Holidays

(Posted on Friday, October 20, 2006)

Source: La Nación

The Ministry of Education has asked Parliament to either abrogate, or grant students derogations to, the recent law moving some of the fixed date Costa Rican holidays to the following Monday.

The Ministry of Education claims that moving holidays to the next Monday skews the curriculum, as students could predominantly miss subject scheduled on Mondays.

It is also claimed that there is a groundswell of opposition in the general public, who it is claimed prefer to celebrate holidays on the actual dates when they occur. The dates displayed above follow the 2005 law, which went into effect in 2006 (17-Mar-2005).
